Game Review: WarCraft, Orcs and Humans

Rating: 7/10

To be perfectly honest, I gave this a 7/10 because of nostalgia. For its time, it had innovative gameplay. But many games have improved from its original flaws and gone further in gameplay.

Let’s look at gameplay first. You could only select four units at a time, and during a battle, you had to select the units to attack because the poor fools under your command were too stupid to notice they were dying. There’s also the fact that there were no real differences between the two races other than appearance, sometimes you went through missions that were almost exactly the same for each race, and..kind of dull, really. As for the storyline, it was a little..basic at best. A mysterious portal has opened, orcs are invading the planet, the local government is trying to hold them back, nothing too impressive.

If you’re a fan of WarCraft, or games similar to it, then this blast from the past is worth the trouble getting it to work on more advanced computers. If, however, you’re just looking for a good strategic game, get something more current. The original WarCraft may have been the beginning of a great world, but like all great things, there are periods of growth. This is the egg -- nothing impressive for now, but a powerful, interesting creature is waiting to be born from its dark interior.
